Merit and Destinations from the Gift of Cows
क्रोधो हन्ति हि यद् दानं तस्माद् दानातू परं दम: । अदृश्यानि महाराज स्थानान्ययुतशो दिवि
bhīṣma uvāca | krodho hanti hi yad dānaṃ tasmād dānāt paraṃ damaḥ | adṛśyāni mahārāja sthānāny ayutaśo divi | kāmayānā mahats thānaṃ tasmād dānāt paraṃ damaḥ ||
Bhishma disse: A ira destrói qualquer mérito que uma dádiva possa ter; por isso, o autocontrole (o poder de conter a ira e os sentidos) é tido como mais elevado do que dar. Ó grande rei, no céu há incontáveis moradas invisíveis; sábios e seres divinos que anseiam pelo estado supremo partem deste mundo para esses reinos pela prática do autocontrole. Assim, o autocontrole é superior à caridade.
