The verse frames kanyādāna (giving a daughter in marriage) as a pivotal dharmic act that stabilizes household life and enables the ongoing duties owed to ancestors, gods, and guests—i.e., the moral-ritual economy of the gṛhastha stage.
In the Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction section, Yudhiṣṭhira respectfully questions Bhīṣma, seeking guidance on the principles and proper considerations surrounding a maiden’s marriage and the dharmic significance of kanyādāna.
