Aṣṭāvakra–Strī-saṃvāda: Dhṛti, hospitality, and a dispute on autonomy
प्रार्थितं दर्शनादेव भजमानां भजस्व माम् | मम चेदं धनं सर्व यच्चान्यदपि पश्यसि,“मैं आपको देखते ही आपके प्रति अनुरक्त हो गयी हूँ; अतः आप मुझ सेविकाको अपनाइये। मेरा यह सारा धन तथा और जो कुछ आप देख रहे हैं, उस सबके तथा मेरे भी आप ही स्वामी हैं--इसमें संशय नहीं है। आप मेरे साथ रमण कीजिये। मैं आपकी समस्त कामनाएँ पूर्ण करूँगी
prārthitaṃ darśanād eva bhajamānāṃ bhajasva mām | mama cedaṃ dhanaṃ sarvaṃ yac cānyad api paśyasi |
“Desde o instante em que te vi, fiquei atraída por ti; por isso, aceita-me, eu que venho a ti como suplicante devota. Toda esta riqueza que é minha, e tudo o mais que vês aqui, pertence somente a ti — e eu também sou tua, sem dúvida. Fica comigo em amor; cumprirei todos os teus desejos.”
सअद्टावक्र उवाच
The verse frames a moral test: an offer of pleasure and wealth is presented as total surrender to the addressee. In dharma-literature, such moments highlight the need for discernment and self-mastery—whether one should accept what is offered, and under what ethical constraints (duty, restraint, and right conduct).
A woman, captivated at first sight, addresses the person before her with an urgent plea: she asks to be accepted, offers her wealth and possessions, and promises to satisfy his desires. The scene functions as a temptation or proposal that tests the listener’s values and conduct.
