Aṣṭāvakra–Strī-saṃvāda: Dhṛti, hospitality, and a dispute on autonomy

ऋषिस्तमाह देया मे सुता तुभ्यं हि तच्छृणु । (अनन्यस्त्रीजन: प्राज्ञो हाप्रवासी प्रियंवद: । सुरूप: सम्मतो वीर: शीलवान्‌ भोगभुक्छवि: ।। दारानुमतयज्ञश्न सुनक्षत्रामथोद्वहेत्‌ । स्वभर्त्रा स्‍्वजनोपेत इह प्रेत्य च मोदते ।।) गच्छ तावद्‌ दिशं पुण्यामुत्तरां द्रक्ष्य्से ततः,वदान्य ऋषिने अष्टावक्रके माँगनेपर इस प्रकार उत्तर दिया--“विप्रवर! जिसके दूसरी कोई स्त्री न हो, जो परदेशमें न रहता हो, विद्वान, प्रिय वचन बोलनेवाला, लोकसम्मानित, वीर, सुशील, भोग भोगनेमें समर्थ, कान्तिमान्‌ और सुन्दर पुरुष हो, उसीके साथ मुझे अपनी पुत्रीका विवाह करना है। जो स्त्रीकी अनुमतिसे यज्ञ करता और उत्तम नक्षत्रवाली कन्याको व्याहता है, वह पुरुष अपनी पत्नीके साथ तथा पत्नी अपने पतिके साथ रहकर दोनों ही इहलोक और परलोकमें आनन्द भोगते हैं। मैं तुम्हें अपनी कन्या अवश्य दे दूँगा, परंतु पहले एक बात सुनो, यहाँसे परम पवित्र उत्तर दिशाकी ओर चले जाओ। वहाँ तुम्हें उसका दर्शन होगा”

bhīṣma uvāca |

ṛṣis tam āha—deyā me sutā tubhyaṃ hi tac chṛṇu |

(ananyastrījanaḥ prājño hy apravāsī priyaṃvadaḥ |

surūpaḥ sammato vīraḥ śīlavān bhogabhuk chaviḥ ||

dārānumatayajñaś ca sunakṣatrām athodvahet |

svabhartṛā svajanopeta iha pretya ca modate ||)

gaccha tāvad diśaṃ puṇyām uttarāṃ drakṣyase tataḥ |

Bhishma disse: O sábio falou-lhe: “Eu te darei minha filha — ouve isto. Quero casá-la apenas com um homem sábio, que não tenha outra mulher, que não viva longe do lar, de palavras agradáveis, belo, honrado pela sociedade, valente, de boa conduta, capaz de desfrutar prazeres lícitos, e radiante. Aquele que realiza sacrifícios com o consentimento de sua esposa e desposa uma donzela sob uma constelação auspiciosa — esse marido com sua esposa, e a esposa com seu marido — regozijam-se neste mundo e também após a morte. Eu de fato te darei minha filha; mas antes ouve uma coisa: vai agora na direção do norte, supremamente santo; ali tu o contemplarás.”

Educational Q&A

The verse frames marriage as a dharmic partnership: the ideal husband is monogamous, present and responsible, gentle in speech, socially respected, brave, and of good character; household rites should be performed with the wife’s consent, and such mutual alignment brings well-being in this life and the next.

Bhishma recounts a sage’s conditions for giving his daughter in marriage: he lists the desired virtues of the groom and then instructs the seeker to go north to behold the suitable man.
