Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca: Pitāmaha mahāprājña sarvaśāstra-viśārada | kiṃ japyaṃ japato nityaṃ bhaved dharma-phalaṃ mahat ||
Yudhiṣṭhira disse: “Avô, tu és supremamente sábio e versado em todos os śāstras. Por isso pergunto: o que deve uma pessoa recitar diariamente—que mantra ou hino—para que, pela repetição constante, alcance uma grande recompensa de dharma?”
युधिछिर उवाच
The verse frames a dharmic inquiry: daily disciplined recitation (japa) is presented as a means to accrue substantial ethical-spiritual merit, and the proper object of recitation should be chosen under scriptural guidance.
In the Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction setting, Yudhiṣṭhira addresses Bhīṣma (his ‘grandfather’) and asks him to recommend a mantra or stotra that, when recited every day, yields great fruit of dharma.
