Praise of the ‘Mental Tīrtha’ and the Marks of Purity
The passage emphasizes karmaphala: righteous merit can yield prolonged heavenly enjoyment, characterized by abundance (nectar-like sustenance) and the absence of craving. It also highlights śravaṇa and manana—listening to and reflecting on the exemplary lives of sages—as a sustaining, elevating practice even in exalted states.
Bhishma describes to the king the posthumous condition of a meritorious person: he attains a divine form, lives for an immense duration (three thousand yugas and kalpas) in a celestial realm, rides a splendid vimana, enjoys the company of beautiful maidens, and engages in hearing and contemplating the deeds of devarishis as recounted by royal sages.
