अध्याय ९५: चित्राङ्गदस्य गन्धर्वेण सह संग्रामः तथा विचित्रवीर्यस्य राज्याभिषेकः

Chitrāṅgada’s duel with the Gandharva and Vicitravīrya’s consecration

पुष्करिण्यामृचीकश्न भुमन्योरभवन्‌ सुता: । तेषां ज्येष्ठ: सुहोत्रस्तु राज्यमाप महीक्षिताम्‌,भुमन्युके दिविरथ नामक पुत्र हुआ। उसके सिवा सुहोत्र, सुहोता, सुहवि, सुयजु तथा ऋचीक भी भुमन्युके ही पुत्र थे। ये सब पुष्करिणीके गर्भसे उत्पन्न हुए थे। इन सब क्षत्रियोंमें सुहोत्र ही ज्येष्ठ थे। अत: उन्हींको राज्य मिला

vaiśampāyana uvāca | puṣkariṇyām ṛcīkaś ca bhūmanyor abhavan sutāḥ | teṣāṁ jyeṣṭhaḥ suhotras tu rājyam āpa mahīkṣitām |

Vaiśampāyana disse: De Puṣkariṇī nasceram filhos para Bhūmanyu—entre eles também Ṛcīka. Dentre todos, Suhotra era o mais velho; por isso obteve a realeza entre os governantes da terra. A passagem ressalta o princípio costumeiro da sucessão por senioridade, apresentando a autoridade real como recebida segundo a ordem da linhagem, e não tomada pela força.
