Vaiśampāyana uvāca: atha dīrghasya kālasya devayānī nṛpottama | vanaṃ tadeva niryātā krīḍārthaṃ varavarṇinī ||
Vaiśampāyana disse: Ó melhor dos reis, depois de muito tempo decorrido, Devayānī—de tez radiante—saiu mais uma vez para aquela mesma floresta, em busca de recreio. O verso abre uma cena serena, sugerindo como o lazer e o movimento comum podem tornar-se a porta pela qual o destino e a consequência moral entram numa história régia e familiar.
