Śukra’s Ultimatum and Devayānī’s Demand (शुक्र-प्रतिज्ञा तथा देवयानी-वर-याचना)
राज्यं शशास सुमहद् धर्मेण पृथिवीपते । पितृन् देवानृषीन् विप्रान् गन्धर्वोरगराक्षसान्,पृथ्वीपते! उन्होंने अपने विशाल राज्यका धर्मपूर्वक शासन किया। पितरों, देवताओं, ऋषियों, ब्राह्मणों, गन्धरवों, नागों, राक्षसों तथा ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय और वैश्योंका भी पालन किया। राजा नहुषने झुंड-के-झुंड डाकुओं और लुटेरोंका वध करके ऋषियोंको भी कर देनेके लिये विवश किया
rājyaṃ śaśāsa sumahad dharmeṇa pṛthivīpate | pitṝn devān ṛṣīn viprān gandharvoragarākṣasān |
Vaiśampāyana disse: Ó senhor da terra, ele governou seu vasto reino de acordo com o dharma, sustentando e honrando os Pitṛs, os deuses, os ṛṣis, os brāhmaṇas, bem como os Gandharvas, Nāgas e Rākṣasas. O verso apresenta a realeza ideal como proteção e manutenção ordenada de todas as classes de seres por meio de um governo justo.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights rājadharma: a king’s legitimacy rests on ruling by dharma—protecting, sustaining, and honoring all orders of beings (human and non-human) rather than ruling by mere force.
Vaiśampāyana describes an exemplary phase of kingship: the ruler governs a vast realm righteously and maintains harmonious relations with ancestral powers, divine beings, sages, priestly communities, and other classes such as Gandharvas, Nāgas, and Rākṣasas.
