Adhyāya 57: Indra’s Counsel to King Vasu; Origin of Satyavatī; Birth of Vyāsa

Educational Q&A

The verse underscores the inevitability of consequences: overwhelming power, size, and supernatural abilities cannot shield beings from the moral force of a curse and the retributive momentum of adharma. It also highlights the terrifying potency of ritual action when driven by punitive intent.

Śaunaka describes the serpent-sacrifice scene in which countless nāgas—some with multiple heads and immense bodies—enter the blazing sacrificial fire and are consumed. Their destruction is linked to their mother’s curse, portrayed as an irresistible brahmanical punishment operating through the ritual.
