The verse elevates steadfast affection and loyal friendship as a legitimate spiritual aim: Kṛṣṇa seeks not power or conquest but an enduring bond with Arjuna, and this is portrayed as worthy of divine sanction.
Vaiśampāyana reports that Kṛṣṇa (Vāsudeva) asks Indra for a boon—perpetual affection with Pārtha (Arjuna)—and Indra grants it; alongside this, the speaker mentions knowing the destined time and bestowing something through great austerity.
