Commencement of Draupadī’s Svayaṃvara
The verse highlights that strict vows and intense resolve do not guarantee control over life and death; when destructive intent is frustrated, the ethical pivot is to return to disciplined living rather than persist in self-harm. Endurance through thwarted despair becomes a form of involuntary tapas, redirecting one back toward the āśrama and ordered duty.
A great sage, attempting to die, is swept by the ocean’s waves and thrown onto the shore. Unable to die despite his efforts, he becomes dejected and returns to his hermitage.
