Aurva Episode: Restoration of Sight and Restraint of World-Destructive Anger
(जानता च मया तस्मात् तेजश्चलाभिजनं च व: । इयं मतिमतां श्रेष्ठ धर्षितुं वै कृता मति: ।। को हि वस्त्रिषु लोकेषु न वेद भरतर्षभ | स्वैर्गुणैविस्तृतं श्रीमद् यशो5ग्र्यं भूरिवर्चसाम् ।।) यक्षराक्षसगन्धर्वा: पिशाचोरगदानवा: । विस्तरं कुरुवंशस्य धीमन्त: कथयन्ति ते,बुद्धिमानोंमें श्रेष्ठ अर्जुन! इसीलिये मैंने आपलोगोंके तेज और कुलोचित प्रभावको जानते हुए भी आपपर आक्रमण करनेका विचार किया। भरतश्रेष्ठी] आपलोग महान् तेजस्वी हैं। आपने अपने गुणोंसे जिस शोभाशाली श्रेष्ठ यशका विस्तार किया है, उसे तीनों लोकोंमें कौन नहीं जानता। बुद्धिमान् यक्ष, राक्षस, गन्धर्व, पिशाच, नाग और दानव कुरुकुलकी यशोगाथाका विस्तारपूर्वक वर्णन करते हैं
gandharva uvāca |
jānatā ca mayā tasmāt tejaś calābhijanaṃ ca vaḥ |
iyaṃ matimatāṃ śreṣṭha dharṣituṃ vai kṛtā matiḥ ||
ko hi vastriṣu lokeṣu na veda bharatarṣabha |
svair guṇair vistṛtaṃ śrīmad yaśo 'gryaṃ bhūrivarcāsām ||
yakṣarākṣasagandharvāḥ piśācā uragā dānavāḥ |
vistaraṃ kuruvaṃśasya dhīmantaḥ kathayanti te ||
Disse o Gandharva: “Embora eu conhecesse o vosso esplendor e a nobreza da vossa linhagem, ó Arjuna, o melhor entre os sábios, ainda assim formei o propósito de vos assaltar. Pois quem, nos três mundos, ó touro entre os Bharatas, não conhece a fama radiante e suprema de vós, os poderosos—fama espalhada ao longe pelas vossas próprias virtudes? Os sábios entre Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, Gandharvas, Piśācas, Nāgas e Dānavas narram em detalhe a glória da dinastia Kuru.”
गन्धर्व उवाच
The verse underscores that true renown (yaśas) arises from one’s own virtues (svaiḥ guṇaiḥ) and becomes a moral force recognized across the ‘three worlds.’ It also warns that even acknowledged greatness can invite challenge—fame provokes tests of strength and restraint.
A Gandharva addresses the Kuru heroes (notably Arjuna), admitting that he attacked despite knowing their splendor and noble lineage. He then affirms that their fame is universally known, even among powerful non-human beings who recount the Kuru dynasty’s glory in detail.
