Aurva Episode: Restoration of Sight and Restraint of World-Destructive Anger
arjuna uvāca yadi prītena me dattaṃ saṃśaye jīvitasya vā | vidyādhanaṃ śrutaṃ vāpi na tad gandharva rocaye ||
Arjuna upholds an ethic of honor and non-transactional virtue: a righteous act—especially saving someone in danger—should not be converted into a bargain for wealth, learning, or scriptural prestige. He rejects gifts that could imply obligation, self-interest, or moral compromise.
In a dialogue with a Gandharva, Arjuna responds to an offer of recompense (knowledge, wealth, or sacred learning). He states that even if the offer is made gladly or as repayment for being saved in a life-threatening situation, he does not wish to accept such a reward.
