Chapter 157
sahadharmacārīṃ dāntāṃ nityaṃ mātṛsamāṃ mama | sakhāyaṃ viditāṃ devair nityaṃ paramikāṃ gatiṃ, priye! |
The verse presents the ideal of marriage as a shared pursuit of dharma: the wife is praised for self-restraint, vigilance, and nurturing care, and is honored as the husband’s foremost support—suggesting that ethical life in the household depends on mutual responsibility and steadfast character.
A Brahmin addresses his beloved wife directly, expressing gratitude and reverence. He describes her as his dharma-companion, mother-like caregiver, and divinely appointed helper, emphasizing her central role in sustaining his life and righteous path.
