पाण्डोः श्राद्धं, सत्यवत्याः वनगमनम्, बाल्यस्पर्धा च
Pāṇḍu’s Śrāddha, Satyavatī’s Withdrawal, and Childhood Rivalry
स्वासु प्रजास्विव सदा सम: प्राणभूृतां प्रति । एककालं चरन् भैक्ष्यं कुलानि दश पञ्च वा,जैसे पिता अपनी अनेक संतानोंमें सर्ववा समभाव रखता है, उसी प्रकार समस्त प्राणियोंके प्रति मेरा सदा समानभाव होगा। (पहले कहे अनुसार) मैं केवल एक समय वक्षोंसे भिक्षा माँूँगा अथवा यह सम्भव न हुआ तो दस-पाँच घरोंमें घूमकर (थोड़ी-थोड़ी) भिक्षा ले लूँगा
svāsu prajāsv iva sadā samaḥ prāṇabhṛtāṁ prati | ekakālaṁ caran bhaikṣyaṁ kulāni daśa pañca vā ||
Vaiśampāyana disse: “Assim como um pai permanece sempre equânime para com seus muitos filhos, assim também manterei igual consideração por todos os seres vivos. Irei pedir esmolas apenas uma vez por dia; ou, se isso não for possível, passarei por dez ou cinco casas, tomando um pouco de cada uma.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse teaches sama-bhāva—impartial, compassionate regard for all living beings—modeled on a father’s equal care for his children, along with disciplined restraint in livelihood by limiting alms-seeking to a minimal, regulated practice.
A speaker (reported by Vaiśampāyana) states a vow or rule of conduct: to remain equally disposed toward all creatures and to live by modest, regulated begging—ideally once daily, otherwise by taking small portions from a limited number of households.
