Pāṇḍu’s Gifts, Forest Residence, and Vidura’s Marriage
तस्य कृष्णस्य कपिलां जटां दीप्ते च लोचने । बशभ्ूणि चैव श्मश्रूणि दृष्टवा देवी न्यमीलयत्,व्यासजीके शरीरका रंग काला था, उनकी जटाएँ पिंगलवर्णकी और आँखें चमक रही थीं तथा दाढ़ी-मूँछ भूरे रंगकी दिखायी देती थी। उन्हें देखकर देवी कौसल्याने (भयके मारे) अपने दोनों नेत्र बंद कर लिये
tasya kṛṣṇasya kapilāṃ jaṭāṃ dīpte ca locane | babhruṇi caiva śmaśrūṇi dṛṣṭvā devī nyamīlayat ||
Disse Vaiśampāyana: Ao ver aquele homem de compleição escura—com as melenas emaranhadas de tom fulvo, os olhos a arder em brilho, e a barba e o bigode castanhos— a rainha Kausalyā, tomada de temor e assombro diante de sua aparência formidável, fechou os olhos.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights how outward signs of intense tapas or formidable spiritual power can evoke fear and reverence; it implicitly cautions that extraordinary appearance and energy should be approached with humility and self-control.
Vaiśampāyana describes a dark-complexioned figure with tawny matted hair, shining eyes, and brown facial hair; upon seeing him, Queen Kausalyā, overwhelmed and afraid, shuts her eyes.
