Pāṇḍu’s Marriages, Conquests, and Triumphal Return (पाण्डोर्विवाह-विजय-प्रत्यागमनम्)

वैशम्पायन उवाच महर्षे: कीर्तने तस्य भीष्म: प्राउजलिरब्रवीत्‌ । धर्ममर्थ च काम॑ च त्रीनेतान्‌ यो5नुपश्यति,उक्त भवत्या यच्छेयस्तन्महां रोचते भृशम्‌ । वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--महर्षि व्यासका नाम लेते ही भीष्मजी हाथ जोड़कर बोले--“माताजी! जो मनुष्य धर्म, अर्थ और काम--इन तीनोंका बारंबार विचार करता है तथा यह भी जानता है कि किस प्रकार अर्थसे अर्थ, धर्मसे धर्म और कामसे कामरूप फलकी प्राप्ति होती है और वह परिणाममें कैसे सुखद होता है तथा किस प्रकार अर्थादिके सेवनसे विपरीत फल (अर्थनाश आदि) प्रकट होते हैं, इन बातोंपर पृथक्‌ू-पृथक्‌ भलीभाँति विचार करके जो धीर पुरुष अपनी बुद्धिके द्वारा कर्तव्याकर्तव्यका निर्णय करता है, वही बुद्धिमान है। तुमने जो बात कही है, वह धर्मयुक्त तो है ही, हमारे कुलके लिये भी हितकर और कल्याणकारी है; इसलिये मुझे बहुत अच्छी लगी है”

vaiśampāyana uvāca | maharṣeḥ kīrtane tasya bhīṣmaḥ prāñjalir abravīt | dharmam arthaṃ ca kāmaṃ ca trīn etān yo'nupaśyati, uktaṃ bhavatyā yac chreyas tan mahān rocayate bhṛśam |

Vaiśampāyana disse: Ao ser pronunciado o nome do grande sábio Vyāsa, Bhīṣma, com as mãos postas em reverência, respondeu: “Mãe, é verdadeiramente sábio aquele que repetidas vezes reflete sobre estas três coisas—dharma, artha e kāma—e discerne como cada uma produz o seu fruto próprio, o que conduz à felicidade no fim, e como a entrega excessiva pode também gerar resultados contrários. O que disseste está de acordo com o dharma e é ainda benéfico e auspicioso para a nossa linhagem; por isso me agrada imensamente.”
