Karna’s Birth, Gift-Ethic, and the Name Vaikartana
राज्ये चैवाभिषिच्यस्व भारताननुशाधि च । दारांश्ष॒ कुरु धर्मेण मा निमज्जी: पितामहान्,“राज्यपर अपना अभिषेक करो और भारतीय प्रजाका पालन करते रहो। धर्मके अनुसार विवाह कर लो; पितरोंकोी नरकमें न गिरने दो”
rājye caivābhiṣicyasva bhāratān anuśādhi ca | dārānś ca kuru dharmeṇa mā nimajjīḥ pitāmahān ||
E sê devidamente consagrado à realeza e governa o povo dos Bhārata. Toma esposa de acordo com o dharma e não deixes que os antepassados caiam na ruína (pela interrupção da linhagem e dos ritos).
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse links righteous kingship with righteous household life: one should accept legitimate authority through consecration, govern the people with discipline, and enter marriage according to dharma so that lineage and ancestral obligations (pitṛ-kārya) are not neglected.
Within Vaiśampāyana’s narration, an elder’s counsel is being conveyed: the addressee is urged to assume the throne formally, rule the Bhāratas responsibly, and marry lawfully—framing these as duties whose neglect would harm the ancestors and the continuity of the family line.
