Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 103 — Dhṛtarāṣṭra–Gāndhārī Vivāha: Proposal, Consent, and the Vow

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights martial self-mastery within kṣatriya-dharma: even when attacked collectively, the ideal warrior maintains composure, counters effectively, and uses proportionate force—skill guided by discipline rather than rage.

A group of kings surrounds Bhīṣma and unleashes a massed volley of arrows. Bhīṣma intercepts the incoming missiles with his own arrow-barrage, blocks the attack from all sides, wounds each king with three arrows, and then receives five arrows from each in return.
