अरणीपर्वरूपाढ्यो विराटोद्योगसारवान् | भीष्मपर्वमहाशाखो द्रोणपर्वपलाशवान्,अरणीपर्व इस वृक्षका ग्रन्थिस्थल है। विराट और उद्योगपर्व इसका सारभाग है। भीष्मपर्व इसकी बड़ी शाखा है और द्रोणपर्व इसके पत्ते हैं
araṇīparvarūpāḍhyo virāṭodyogasāravān | bhīṣmaparvamahāśākho droṇaparvapalāśavān |
O Mahābhārata é comparado a uma grande árvore: o Araṇī-parvan forma seus nós e articulações; os parvans Virāṭa e Udyoga constituem sua seiva e substância; o Bhīṣma-parvan ergue-se como seu grande ramo; e o Droṇa-parvan se espalha como suas folhas. A imagem sugere uma unidade orgânica em que cada seção nutre o todo, preparando o terreno moral e estratégico para a guerra e remetendo continuamente ao dharma e à conduta correta.
The verse teaches that the Mahābhārata’s many books form an integrated whole, like parts of a living tree. Each parvan has a distinct function—some are structural ‘joints,’ others the ‘essence,’ and others the outward ‘branches’ and ‘leaves’—implying that ethical reflection (dharma) and the unfolding of war are prepared gradually and organically across the epic.
In the opening chapter’s overview of the epic, the text maps specific parvans onto parts of a tree. It identifies Araṇī-parvan as the knot/joint, Virāṭa and Udyoga as the sap-like essence, Bhīṣma as a major branch, and Droṇa as the leaves—summarizing how these sections contribute to the epic’s progression toward and through the Kurukṣetra war.
