(Anukramaṇikā Adhyāya) — Invocation, Narrator Frame, and Textual Scope
Superior skill alone does not guarantee success; when decisive action is withheld—whether from restraint, allegiance, or circumstance—confidence in victory collapses. The verse highlights how outcomes in war depend on intent and resolve as much as prowess.
The speaker observes Droṇa demonstrating many weapon-techniques on the battlefield, yet not killing any of the foremost Pāṇḍavas. Interpreting this as a grave sign, he tells Sañjaya that he has abandoned hope of victory.
