(Anukramaṇikā Adhyāya) — Invocation, Narrator Frame, and Textual Scope
The verse highlights how extraordinary competence joined with respectful service to an elder can decisively shift morale and perceived outcomes in war. Ethical strength here is shown as disciplined skill used in the service of duty and reverence, making opponents lose confidence.
The speaker says that upon hearing of Bhīṣma lying on a bed of arrows and requesting water, and of Arjuna piercing the earth with an arrow to bring forth water and quench Bhīṣma’s thirst, he lost hope of victory—seeing Arjuna’s exceptional capability and readiness.
