Lord Vishnu (teaching Garuda/Vinata-putra)

Beneficiary: Pitr

Concept: Śrāddha is to be performed with Viṣṇu-buddhi—understanding the offering as ultimately to Viṣṇu—within a Purāṇic framework that upholds Viṣṇu’s supremacy.

Vedantic Theme: Īśvara-arpaṇa-buddhi (offering-attitude) transforming karma into bhakti; harmonizing pitṛ-kārya with devotion to the Supreme.

Application: When performing śrāddha, maintain sankalpa and inner attitude that the act is offered to Viṣṇu as antaryāmin; choose sāttvika recitations and avoid distractions/inauspicious content during śrāddha-kathā.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: vira

Related Themes: Garuda Purana: extensive śrāddha and preta-śānti sections often frame offerings as pleasing to Viṣṇu and beneficial to pitṛ-s; Garuda Purana: repeated emphasis that Viṣṇu-nāma and Viṣṇu-bhakti sanctify rites for ancestors

FAQs

This verse teaches that the śrāddha rite becomes most effective when done with the clear intention that Viṣṇu is the ultimate recipient and support of the offering, making it the foremost recommended practice.

Rather than detailing the journey here, the verse emphasizes the supporting rite for the departed: consistent śrāddha performed with correct devotional intent, which is presented as the primary actionable aid aligned with dharma.

When doing memorial rites or ancestral offerings, prioritize sincerity and Vaiṣṇava intent—treat the act as an offering to Viṣṇu, and keep the practice steady and respectful rather than chasing many alternative rituals.
