Gayā-yātrā-vidhi: Multi-day Śrāddha Route, Pitṛ-devatās, and Akṣaya Merit at Gayā

Lord Viṣṇu (in dialogue with Garuḍa/Vainateya)

Ritual Type: Parvana

Beneficiary: Pitr

Timing: At Gayāśīrṣa during pitṛ-kārya (often undertaken as a dedicated Gayā-śrāddha pilgrimage; specific tithi not stated here).

Concept: Karma’s fruit is magnified by tīrtha-kṣetra and by precise saṅkalpa (explicit naming) in offerings to Pitṛs.

Vedantic Theme: Adhikāra and saṅkalpa as subtle determinants of karma-phala; sacred space as a dharma-kṣetra that intensifies results.

Application: When performing piṇḍa-dāna, clearly state gotra/nāma/relationship of the intended Pitṛs; combine modest tapas (restraint, purity) with correct ritual intention.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Type: tīrtha (pilgrimage headland/peak/holy precinct)

FAQs

This verse states that Gayāśīrṣa is a highly meritorious tīrtha where even small austerity yields great puṇya, and piṇḍa offerings made there specifically for named ancestors are especially efficacious.

Naming clarifies the saṅkalpa (intention) and dedicates the rite to particular Pitṛs, ensuring the offering is ritually directed to the intended ancestors rather than remaining general.

When performing śrāddha or piṇḍa-dāna, maintain clear intention and proper dedication (saṅkalpa)—including naming ancestors when appropriate—while approaching the rite with sincerity, restraint, and reverence.
