Golden Deer Stratagem
वीर्ये युद्धे च दर्पे च न ह्यस्ति सदृशस्तव।उपायज्ञो महान्शूरस्सर्वमायाविशारदः।।।।
vīrye yuddhe ca darpe ca na hy asti sadṛśas tava | upāya-jño mahān śūras sarva-māyā-viśāradaḥ || 3.36.16 ||
ਵੀਰਤਾ ਵਿੱਚ, ਯੁੱਧ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਤੇ ਦਰਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਮਾਨ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ। ਤੂੰ ਉਪਾਯਾਂ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਤਾ ਹੈਂ, ਮਹਾਨ ਸ਼ੂਰ ਹੈਂ, ਅਤੇ ਹਰ ਮਾਇਆ-ਵਿਦਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਿਪੁਣ ਹੈਂ।
You are mighty. I do not care to fight even the gods when you and my brothers are by my side. Therefore, O demon, be my accomplice. (I know) you are capable of that.
Skill and intelligence are ethically neutral; dharma depends on purpose and method. Here, praise of māyā and stratagems signals a turn from righteous means toward deception.
Rāvaṇa flatters Mārīca’s prowess and expertise in illusion to recruit him for a trick-based operation.
