धर्म तु ब्राह्मणस्याहु: स्वाध्यायं दममार्जवम्
dharma tu brāhmaṇasyāhuḥ svādhyāyaṁ damam ārjavam
ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ—ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਦਾ ਧਰਮ ਇਹ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ: ਸਵਾਧਿਆਇ, ਦਮ (ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹ) ਅਤੇ ਆਰਜਵ (ਸਿੱਧੀ-ਸਾਧੀ ਨੇਕੀ)।

A Brahmin’s dharma is defined by inner and intellectual virtues: svādhyāya (sacred study), dama (self-control), and ārjava (honest, straightforward conduct).
