Prāyaścitta-vidhāna: Tapas, Dāna, Vrata, and Proportional Expiation (प्रायश्चित्तविधानम्)
क्षयं शोकं प्रकुर्वाणो न म्रियेत यदा नर: । शस्त्रादिभिरुपाविष्ट स्त्रिरात्रं तत्र निर्दिशेत्
kṣayaṃ śokaṃ prakurvāṇo na mriyeta yadā naraḥ | śastrādibhir upāviṣṭaḥ strirātraṃ tatra nirdiśet ||
ਵਿਆਸ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ—ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਸ ਨਾਲ ਘਿਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਤਿਆਗਣ ਦੇ ਇਰਾਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਬੈਠ ਜਾਵੇ—ਚਾਹੇ ਮਰਨ ਤੱਕ ਵਰਤ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ, ਚਾਹੇ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਆਦਿ ਨਾਲ ਆਤਮਘਾਤ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰ ਕੇ—ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ ਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਨਿੰਦਣਯੋਗ ਕਰਤੂਤ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਦੇ ਦੋਸ਼ ਦੀ ਨਿਵ੍ਰਿੱਤੀ ਲਈ ਤਿੰਨ ਰਾਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਪਵਾਸ ਪ੍ਰਾਯਸ਼ਚਿੱਤ ਵਜੋਂ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
