Adhyāya 284: Tapas as a Corrective to Household Attachment
Parāśara’s Instruction
मनसा चिन्तितं यच्च यच्च वाचानुकीर्तितम् | सर्व सम्पद्यते तस्य स्तवस्यास्यानुकीर्तनात्
manasā cintitaṃ yac ca yac ca vācānukīrtitam | sarvaṃ sampadyate tasya stavasya asyānukīrtanāt ||
ਭੀਸ਼ਮ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ—ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਉਹ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਇੱਛਾ ਉਹ ਬੋਲੀਂ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਸਤੋਤ੍ਰ ਦੇ ਵਾਰੰਵਾਰ ਪਾਠ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਉਸ ਲਈ ਪੂਰਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
भीष्म उवाच
Repeated recitation of a sacred hymn is presented as a means by which a person’s mental intentions and spoken wishes are brought to fulfillment—highlighting the Mahabharata’s emphasis on disciplined devotion and the alignment of inner resolve with righteous speech.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction-setting, Bhishma is describing the fruit (phala) of reciting a particular stotra: he assures the listener that whatever is desired in thought or requested in words becomes attainable through its continual chanting.
