कच्चिद् धर्मे त्रयीमूले पूर्वराचरिते जनै: । यतमानस्तथा कर्तु तस्मिन् कर्मणि वर्तसे,तीनों वेद ही जिसके मूल हैं और पूर्वपुरुषोंने जिसका आचरण किया है, उस धर्मका अनुष्ठान करनेके लिये तुम अपने पूर्वजोंकी ही भाँति प्रयत्नशील तो रहते हो? धर्मानुकूल कर्ममें ही तुम्हारी प्रवृत्ति तो रहती है?

ਨਾਰਦ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ—ਕੀ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਧਰਮ ਦਾ ਆਚਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਯਤਨਸ਼ੀਲ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਜੜ੍ਹ ਤ੍ਰਯੀ (ਤਿੰਨ ਵੇਦ) ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਅਪਣਾਇਆ ਸੀ? ਕੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੂਰਵਜਾਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਧਰਮ-ਅਨੁਕੂਲ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
