Karṇa’s Breach of Yudhiṣṭhira’s Battle-Line
pratijñāya tato devo devatānāṁ ripukṣayam | rāmaṁ bhārgavam āhūya so 'bhyabhāṣata śaṅkaraḥ ||
The verse foregrounds the ethical weight of a solemn vow (pratijñā) made in a public, divine assembly: when cosmic order is threatened, divine authority may initiate corrective action, but it is framed as duty-bound protection rather than personal vengeance.
Śiva (Śaṅkara), after promising the gods that he will destroy their enemies, calls Paraśurāma (Rāma Bhārgava) and begins to speak to him—introducing a divine directive that will shape subsequent events.
