वीरास्थिशर्करां रौद्रां भेरीमुरजकच्छपाम् । चर्मवर्मप्लवां घोरां केशशैवलशाद्धलाम्
vīrāsthiśarkarāṁ raudrāṁ bherīmurajakacchapām | carmavarmaplavāṁ ghorāṁ keśaśaivalśādvalām ||
ਉਸ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਧਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਹੱਡੀਆਂ ਰੇਤ ਤੇ ਕੰਕਰਾਂ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਦਿੱਸਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ; ਭੇਰੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਰਜ ਢੋਲ ਕੱਛੂਆਂ ਵਰਗੇ ਲੱਗਦੇ ਸਨ; ਢਾਲਾਂ ਤੇ ਬਕਤਰ ਕਿਸ਼ਤੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ ਤੈਰ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ। ਵਾਲ ਹੀ ਉੱਥੇ ਕਾਈ ਤੇ ਘਾਹ ਬਣ ਗਏ ਸਨ। ਇਹ ਚਿੱਤਰ ਜਿੱਤ ਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਯੁੱਧ ਦੀ ਨੈਤਿਕ ਦਹਿਸ਼ਤ ਦਾ ਹੈ—ਜਦੋਂ ਕੌਸ਼ਲ ਹਿੰਸਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਰਣ ਦੀ ਧਾਰ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਤੇ ਡਰਪੋਕ—ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਵਹਾ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
संजय उवाच
The verse underscores the ethical gravity of war: even when fought under kṣatriya duty, battle produces a dehumanizing devastation. The poetic ‘river’ imagery functions as moral commentary—martial prowess can become a force that sweeps away life indiscriminately, warning the listener not to romanticize violence.
Sañjaya describes Droṇa’s onslaught in the Kurukṣetra war through an extended metaphor: the battlefield becomes a terrifying river where bones are gravel, drums are tortoises, and shields/armor are boats, conveying the scale and dreadfulness of the slaughter.
