Educational Q&A

In the midst of prolonged suffering, ethical leadership and steady counsel become a ‘gati’—a refuge and direction. The line underscores the moral responsibility of a ruler/elder to provide guidance when others are overwhelmed by grief.

Sañjaya addresses the king (implicitly Dhṛtarāṣṭra), acknowledging that the king has served as a support and guiding refuge for those crushed by ongoing sorrow during the calamities of the war.
