Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the Mahābhārata’s ethical tension: warriors act within their chosen dharma and allegiance, yet the instruments of war are portrayed as embodiments of death. It invites reflection on how duty-driven action can still carry grave moral weight and consequences.

Sañjaya describes Śveta taking up a fearsome spear, likened to Death’s own rod and tongue, then raising it and, after a deep breath, addressing Bhīṣma on the battlefield—signaling an imminent confrontation.
