Adhyāya 57: Tapas–Dāna Phala
On the Fruits of Austerity and Giving
क्वचिदप्सरसां संघान् गन्धर्वाणां च पार्थिव
kvacid apsarasāṃ saṅghān gandharvāṇāṃ ca pārthiva | pṛthvīnātha! kvacid jhuṇḍa-kī-jhuṇḍa apsarāḥ vihāraṃ kurvanti sma | kvacid gandharvāṇāṃ samudāyāḥ svapriyatamānām āliṅgana-pāśe baddhāḥ santi sma | tān sarvān rājā dadarśa | te kadācid enaṃ dṛśyante sma kadācin na dṛśyante sma ||
ਭੀਸ਼ਮ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ—ਹੇ ਰਾਜਨ, ਧਰਤੀਨਾਥ! ਕਿਤੇ ਅਪਸਰਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਟੋਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਟੋਲੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਕ੍ਰੀੜਾ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ; ਕਿਤੇ ਗੰਧਰਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮੂਹ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਿਯਤਮਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਲਿੰਗਨ-ਪਾਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਜਾਪਦੇ ਸਨ। ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਵੇਖੇ—ਪਰ ਕਦੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ।
