Bhīṣma’s Yogic Departure, Royal Cremation, and Gaṅgā’s Lament (भीष्मस्य योगयुक्त्या देहत्यागः, पितृमेधः, गङ्गाविलापः)
अप्येवात्मवध॑ लोके राजंस्त्वं बहु मन्यसे । न हि प्रतिज्ञा या दत्ता तां प्रहातुमरिंदम
apy evātmavadhaṁ loke rājan tvaṁ bahu manyase | na hi pratijñā yā dattā tāṁ prahātum arindama ||
ਭੀਸ਼ਮ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ— ਰਾਜਨ! ਕੀ ਤੂੰ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਤਮ-ਵਧ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਵੱਡਾ ਮਾਰਗ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈਂ? ਹੇ ਸ਼ਤਰੂਦਮਨ! ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਗਿਆ ਤੂੰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡਣਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਯੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ। ਤੂੰ ਵੈਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤ ਕੇ ਨਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਜਾ-ਪਾਲਨ ਦਾ ਵਰਤ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ; ਦੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਵਸ਼ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਹੱਤਿਆ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਉਸ ਧਰਮ-ਸੰਕਲਪ ਤੋਂ ਡਿੱਗਣਾ ਹੈ।
