On the Causes/Means of Knowledge
sauriprakāśe ca yathaiva darśanaṃ tathā mama jñānagato viśeṣaḥ / dīpaprakāśe ca yathaiva darśanaṃ tathā jñānaṃ vāsudevasya cāsti
Lord Vishnu (Vāsudeva) speaking to Garuda (Vinata-putra)
Concept: Knowledge functions like light: it makes ‘seeing’ possible; divine knowledge is the illuminator analogous to sun and lamp.
Vedantic Theme: Consciousness/knowledge as prakāśa (illumination) enabling cognition; gradations of illumination without denying the source.
Application: Treat study, meditation, and remembrance of Vāsudeva as ‘lighting the lamp’—create conditions (attention, purity, discipline) for clear seeing.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 3.12.34 (clarity vs. unclear grasp); Garuda Purana 3.12.36 (gradation of knowledge-power)
The verse uses sunlight and lamplight as metaphors to show that true perception depends on illumination—similarly, spiritual clarity depends on the presence of authentic knowledge rooted in the Divine (Vāsudeva).
It frames jñāna as an enabling light for understanding reality, implying that knowledge is not merely information but a power that reveals truth—ultimately grounded in Vāsudeva.
Cultivate discernment by seeking teachings and practices that increase clarity and reduce confusion—study, reflection, and devotion that align one’s understanding with dharma and truth.
