Paramparā (Transmission), Rudra’s Viṣṇu-Dhyāna, and the Garuḍa Purāṇa’s Origin-Impulse
taṃ praṇamyopaviṣṭo 'haṃ pṛṣṭavānhi munīśvaram / sūta uvāca / vyāsa brūhi hare rūpaṃ jagatsargādikaṃ tataḥ
Sūta (narrator, addressing Vyāsa)
Concept: Proper reception of knowledge: bowing, sitting, and questioning; the requested topics (Hari’s form and creation) frame theology and cosmology as integrated.
Vedantic Theme: Saguna Brahman contemplation (Hari-rupa) as an entry to understanding jagat-karya (creation) and ultimately the ground of being.
Application: Begin study with reverence; structure learning from the divine principle (Ishvara) to the world-process (sarga), keeping metaphysics and ethics aligned.
Primary Rasa: vira
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Type: ashrama/tirtha
Related Themes: Garuda Purana’s later cosmological and soteriological sections often begin from Vishnu’s supremacy and proceed to sarga, karma, and gati
This verse sets the teaching sequence: understanding Hari (Viṣṇu) as the divine foundation precedes explanations of cosmology and doctrine, framing later topics within devotion and metaphysical order.
Indirectly: by establishing the Purāṇa’s narrative frame—beginning with Hari and creation—before later moving into ethics, karma, and post-death teachings that depend on this cosmic context.
Begin spiritual study with reverence (praṇāma) and disciplined inquiry; place ritual and ethical practice within a larger view of divine order and purpose.
