Udyoga-parva Adhyāya 47 — Arjuna’s Deterrent Declaration

Sañjaya’s Report

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical weight of attentive listening to a competent and authoritative speaker: when speech is samarthā (effective, well-founded), the proper response is śuśrūṣā—eager, disciplined attention—like the gods toward Indra.

Sañjaya describes the assembly’s reaction: the Pāṇḍavas and their Sṛñjaya allies are listening closely to Arjuna’s forceful, persuasive words, and Sañjaya frames their attention through a divine simile comparing Arjuna’s reception to Indra’s among the gods.
