War-aversion, Desire as a Policy Fault, and Analysis of Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Governance
निबन्धनी हार्थतृष्णेह पार्थ तामिच्छतां बाध्यते धर्म एव । धर्म तु यः प्रवृणीते स बुद्ध: कामे गृध्नो हीयते<र्थानुरोधात्
sañjaya uvāca | nibandhanī hārthatṛṣṇeha pārtha tām icchatāṃ bādhyate dharma eva | dharmaṃ tu yaḥ pravṛṇīte sa buddhaḥ kāme gṛdhno hīyate 'rthānurodhāt |
ସଞ୍ଜୟ କହିଲେ—ହେ ପାର୍ଥ! ଏହି ଲୋକରେ ଧନତୃଷ୍ଣା ହିଁ ପ୍ରକୃତ ବନ୍ଧନ। ଯେମାନେ ତାହା ପଛେ ଧାଉଛନ୍ତି, ସେମାନଙ୍କର ଧର୍ମ ଦମିତ ହୋଇ କ୍ଷୀଣ ହୁଏ। କିନ୍ତୁ ଯେ ଧର୍ମକୁ ବରେ, ସେଇ ନିଶ୍ଚୟ ଜ୍ଞାନୀ; ଭୋଗଲୋଭୀ ମନୁଷ୍ୟ ଲାଭାସକ୍ତିରେ ଧର୍ମପଥରୁ ଖସିପଡ଼େ।
संजय उवाच
Craving for wealth is portrayed as a primary cause of bondage: it suppresses dharma. True wisdom lies in choosing dharma over material gain and pleasure, because greed for enjoyment—driven by concern for profit—leads to moral decline.
Sanjaya addresses Partha (Arjuna) with a reflective moral observation relevant to the impending conflict: he frames the ethical danger of letting the pursuit of wealth and pleasure override righteous conduct, underscoring the need to prioritize dharma amid political and personal pressures.
