Udyoga Parva Adhyāya 132 — Vidura’s Counsel on Udyama, Yaśas, and Kṣātra-Dharma
mā sama sīmantiṇī kācid janayet putram īdṛśam |
The verse condemns cowardice and inertness in the face of conflict: a son should not be one who lacks spirited resolve (utsāha), strength (bala), and heroic initiative (parākrama), because such weakness empowers adversaries and undermines dharma in a warrior context.
Vāyudeva delivers a sharp rebuke framed as a moral warning: he declares that no woman should bear a son of the described type—one whose lack of courage and energy becomes a source of happiness for enemies—thus urging the cultivation of warrior virtues appropriate to the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war setting.
