Udyoga Parva, Adhyāya 106: Pūrva-Diśa Praśaṃsā
Praise and Primacy of the Eastern Quarter
kutaḥ kṛtaghnasya yaśaḥ kutaḥ sthānaṃ kutaḥ sukham | aśraddheyaḥ kṛtaghno hi kṛtaghne nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ ||
Gratitude is a foundational ethical duty: without it, a person becomes untrustworthy and forfeits fame, social standing, and inner happiness; the text stresses that ingratitude is a grave moral failure with no easy atonement.
In Udyoga Parva, Nārada delivers a moral admonition within the broader pre-war counsel and negotiations, warning that thanklessness undermines dharma and makes a person socially and spiritually irredeemable.
