Kṣātra-dharma as the Public Foundation of Dharma (क्षात्रधर्म-प्रशंसा)

Educational Q&A

Bhīṣma defines the brāhmaṇa’s dharma as disciplined self-restraint (dama), purity (śauca), and straightforward integrity (ārjava), presenting these as foundational virtues that sustain righteous conduct.

In the Śānti Parva’s instruction to the king (Yudhiṣṭhira), Bhīṣma continues his discourse on social and ethical order, explaining the prescribed qualities and life-framework (āśramas) associated with the brāhmaṇa.
