Chapter 57: Constant Royal Vigilance, Primacy of Protection, and Principles of Dismissal
स्वकर्मनिरता यस्य जना विषयवासिन: । असंघातरता दान्ता: पाल्यमाना यथाविधि
svakarmaniratā yasya janā viṣayavāsinaḥ | asaṅghātaratā dāntāḥ pālyamānā yathāvidhi ||
ଭୀଷ୍ମ କହିଲେ—ଯାହାଙ୍କ ରାଜ୍ୟରେ ଲୋକେ ବିଷୟଜୀବନରେ ରହିଲେ ମଧ୍ୟ ବିଧିପୂର୍ବକ ସୁରକ୍ଷିତ ଓ ପାଳିତ ହୋଇ, ନିଜ-ନିଜ କର୍ମରେ ନିରତ ରହନ୍ତି, ଆସକ୍ତିରହିତ ଓ ଜିତେନ୍ଦ୍ରିୟ ହୋଇ ଶାସନ-ଶୃଙ୍ଖଳାରେ ଅବସ୍ଥିତ ରହନ୍ତି—ସେଇ ରାଜା ସତ୍ୟରେ ଶ୍ରେଷ୍ଠ।
भीष्म उवाच
A king’s excellence is measured by the dharmic condition of his subjects: when people are properly protected and governed, they can adhere to their own duties and cultivate self-restraint and non-attachment.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on rajadharma, Bhishma describes the marks of an ideal ruler by describing the disciplined, duty-oriented, well-protected state of the people living in that king’s realm.
