Aśmagīta: Janaka’s Inquiry on Loss, Kāla, and the Limits of Control (अश्मगीता)
śītam uṣṇaṃ tathā varṣaṃ kālena parivartate | evam eva manuṣyāṇāṃ sukha-duḥkhe nararṣabha ||
Janaka teaches equanimity: just as seasons inevitably change by the force of Time, so too pleasure and pain arise and pass according to Time; therefore one should not be shaken by either.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on peace and right conduct, King Janaka speaks to a noble interlocutor (“O best of men”), using the cycle of seasons to explain that human experiences of joy and grief are governed by Kāla (Time).
