Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that true dharma can be lived as a continuous ‘yajña’ (sacrificial offering) through disciplined speech, mind, and action—by japa and scriptural study, meditation, and righteous duties—grounded in peace (śānti) and self-control (dama).

Bhishma, lying on his bed of arrows and instructing Yudhiṣṭhira in Śānti Parva, describes his own intended spiritual regimen: he will remain devoted to peace and Brahma-yajña and, at the auspicious time of uttarāyaṇa, depart by the northern course through sustained inner and outer disciplines.
