The verse highlights how steadfast valor and focused purpose can morally and psychologically dominate a battlefield: a disciplined champion can break the cohesion of a larger opposing force, just as a lion’s presence scatters a herd.
In the Karṇa Parva battle sequence, Arjuna’s assault is described as causing severe disarray in the opposing army; the poet intensifies the scene through a vivid simile comparing the enemy host to a herd of deer and Arjuna’s impact to that of a lion.
