As a colophon, the verse does not teach through direct instruction but through framing: it signals that the episode culminates in Duryodhana’s setback, reinforcing the Mahābhārata’s ethical pattern that strategies rooted in adharma and cruelty invite reversal and suffering even amid apparent battlefield success.
This line is the chapter-ending colophon: Sañjaya marks the conclusion of the forty-fifth chapter of the Droṇa Parva, within the Abhimanyu-slaying section, specifically noting the theme/event of Duryodhana’s defeat in this chapter’s account.
