The verse highlights the moral and psychological conflict of a ruler attached to his own side: Dhṛtarāṣṭra feels shame that his sons’ army was checked, yet also admiration and satisfaction at the extraordinary valor of a young warrior. It underscores how attachment (to one’s faction) can fracture judgment even while recognizing genuine merit.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra asks Sañjaya about the battle situation: Abhimanyu, the son of Subhadrā, has halted the advance of the Kaurava forces. Hearing this, Dhṛtarāṣṭra confesses mixed emotions—embarrassment for his side’s setback and pleased admiration for Abhimanyu’s prowess.
