The verse underscores the dehumanizing consequence of adharma-driven warfare: once violence is unleashed, even the strong become trapped in the very bloodshed they create, surrounded by consuming forces like fire—an ethical warning about the self-propagating nature of cruelty.
Sañjaya describes the battlefield’s horror: warriors sink ankle-deep in blood-mud, while flames (or blazing weapons/fires) surround them, making them appear like large trees encircled by a raging forest fire.
